Two members of Langa Safety Patrol (LSP) have been arrested in connection of murder. The members allegedly assaulted and injured a man over an alleged robbery.
The group is known for catching criminals and parade them on social media and ask them to confess their crime in public.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk said the incident happened on Tuesday 03 January 2023. It is not clear what the deceased was accused of but the patrollers beat him and left him seriously injured.
He was taken to a nearby hospital and died.
Van Wyk confirmed the development. “Langa police are investigating a murder case after an assault of a person who later died in hospital due to injuries sustained on Tuesday 2023-01-03 and later.
“According to reports members were informed at approximately 11:00 of a person who was assaulted and died at a nearby hospital.
“Two suspects aged 32 and 34 were arrested today (Tuesday, 2023-01-10) and charged for murder case. They will appear in Bishop Lavis Magistrate Court tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 2023-01-11) on the mentioned charges,” he said.
The new Langa station commander Colonel Ronald Jacobs is appealing to those community members who have been attacked by patrollers before to come forward.
“The Police sensitised the community members not to take the law into their own hands because they will be prosecuted,” said Van Wyk.
