Man shot as bullets fly at taxi rank
A man was shot at Nomzamo taxi rank on Saturday.

The police are looking into a shooting that took place at the Nomzamo taxi rank in Strand, Cape Town, on Saturday, 1st February. The incident occurred around 11am when two men shot a taxi driver who was standing beside his vehicle, waiting to pick up passengers.

Witnesses at the scene described the event as terrifying, as it unfolded right before their eyes. One person said the driver had just parked to start loading passengers when two men, pretending to walk by, opened fire on him. The witness explained that the image of what happened would stay with them forever, as it was such a shocking experience.

A nearby vendor who works close to the taxi rank reported hearing several gunshots before seeing the suspects running towards a getaway car. People walking nearby were said to be stunned as they saw the gunmen heading in their direction. When the vendor looked towards the taxi rank, she saw the victim’s body lying next to his vehicle.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a spokesperson for Western Cape police, confirmed the shooting. He explained that Lwandle police were investigating the event, which took place around 11:10am on 1st February. Initial reports suggest two unknown suspects approached the taxi rank and opened fire on the 48-year-old driver.

The victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. The suspects fled the scene, and no arrests have been made so far. Lwandle detectives are treating the case as a murder investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
