A man who was selling amagwinya along Klipfontein road in Gugulethu has been shot and killed this afternoon 23 September. The incident happened in Barcelona informal settlement. His body was found next to graves in the area.

According to residents who witnessed the incident, two men who were walking on foot shot and killed the deceased. They fired shots at him as he was trying to run away from the attack. Rasta was running towards the graveyard, opposite his stall. After shooting him, the two men ran into a Toyota Avanza that was parked a distance away from the scene.

Residents who spoke to Ezitshisayo believe Rasta was killed for his money. The man allegedly wanted money for protection fee from him but he allegedly didn’t have. “They wanted money from him but he couldn’t give them. They saw him getting some change from a nearby shop so when he told them that he didnt have money they got angry,” said a resident.

Rasta, known as a jovial and hardworking member of the community, enjoyed considerable popularity as a vendor of amagwinya. His friendly demeanor, coupled with his savory food, made his stall a favorite destination for locals.

“He was a good guy who never fought with anyone. When you are hungry he would even give you amagwinya on credit and you will pay later. We are sad about his death,” said another resident.

Besides Rasta’s death, two other people died in Ny44 last night, Friday 22 September.
