Three people have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a Golden Arrow Bus overturned on Klipfontein Road earlier today, 25 September. The bus which was en route from Mitchel’s Plain to Cape Town, had over 40 passengers on board when the accident occurred, leaving some trapped under the vehicle.
Megan Davids, the spokesperson for the Western Cape province’s Emergency Medical Services, confirmed the devastating incident. “EMS received a call on 25 September following a bus accident on Jakes Gerwel. At the scene, we can confirm 38 passengers with 26 injuries and 9 passengers who left prior to transportation,” said Davids.
Following the incident, the City of Cape Town’s Traffic department spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs, announced the closure of Jakes Gerwel, Klipfontein, and Turfhall roads. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes to minimize disruptions.
“Cape Town Traffic Officers are attending a crash scene where a Golden Arrow bus has overturned. Jakes Gerwel Drive southbound is closed between Klipfontein and Turfhall roads. The City’s emergency services are on the scene,” said Jacobs.

A witness Oswald Jones said the accident scene was terrifying. “I was passing with my car and I could see people trapped under the bus. Those who were around could not do anything since they couldn’t lift the bus. It is was sad, the rain was pouring on top of them,” he said.
