A drunk Polo driver was arrested in Philippi after he pointed a firearm at two law enforcement officers. The incident happened on Govan Mbeki Road in Luzuko on Saturday 11 March.
Mayor member of Safety and Security Jean-Pierre Smith said officers who were patrolling in the area heard gunshots close to Luzuko Drive. When they went to check what was going on, officers saw a White VW Polo trying to speed off. They managed to stop the vehicle which had three occupants.
“The driver pointed a firearm at the two officers, and they soon realised he was inebriated as he was rude, hurling insults and didn’t want to hand over the firearm. More officers arrived to subdue the driver and confiscate his firearm, a 38 Special revolver,” said Smith.
The driver was arrested and taken to Philippi East SAPS, while his two passengers were released.
Meanwhile, Provincial Traffic Services have arrested 76 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol between 06 and 12 March. The officers recorded 14 crashes during the same period. Four drivers, one motorcyclist, a motorcycle pillion and seven pedestrians died on the roads during between 06 and 12.
MEC for Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie said people must not drink and drive. “Alcohol and roads do not mix. Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your judgement as a driver or a pedestrian. Take personal responsibility and do not drive or walk when you have been drinking. Rather make other arrangements to get home,” he said.
