A Cape Town mother is heartbroken after a seven-year-old boy Wangata Maqhutyana lost his life in a tragic accident on the 1st of March. Wangata from NY89, Gugulethu in Cape Town met his untimely death after being crushed by a truck while playing with his friends.
According to his mother Thembisa Maqhutyana(42), Wangata and his friends were chasing a truck that was passing by, clinging onto its back as it moved through the street. The fatal turn of events occurred when the truck began to reverse, prompting the boys to disembark. Unfortunately, Wangata lost his footing and fell to the ground, tragically coming under the wheels of the truck, resulting in fatal head injuries.
The devastated mother is heartbroken over the loss of her son. She recounted how Wangata had left home around 8 p.m. in the company of his sister, intending to visit a nearby shop. The news of her son’s demise came as an unimaginable shock to her.
“I sometimes wish if they didn’t go, but at the same time, I couldn’t stop them because I didn’t know that something bad was going to happen to him,” she lamented.
Wangata, described as a bright and cheerful grade one student at Nobantu Primary School, leaves behind a community in mourning. His tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers children may face while innocently playing in their neighbourhoods.
