University student shot during robbery

Students from the University of Western Cape are shocked after a student was shot and killed in an apparent robbery on Saturday 29 April. The deceased student Kamva Dasi(22) was walking with his friends in Kern’s Crescent in Belhar when they were accosted by the robbers. The students allegedly ran away and Kamva was shot and died at the scene.

The robbers in a blue/black Golf drove away leaving Kamva lying on the street. Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the incident.

“Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on 2023-04-29 at 22:37 at Kern’s Crescent, Belhar where a 22-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation. A murder case was registered for investigation. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined,” said Van Wyk.

Van Wyk said police are urging anyone with any information about this fatal shooting incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Dr Matete Madiba the deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Development and Support has issued a statement about the incident.

“The University of the Western Cape is traumatised and saddened to learn of the murder of our student, Mr Kamva Dasi. We are devastated that his young life has been cut short. The incident occurred on Saturday night, 29 April 2023, in Belhar. Mr Dasi was fatally shot during an armed robbery. This is now a matter for the South African Police Services (SAPS). The University will, as always, cooperate fully with the SAPS,” Madiba said.

She said the University has reached out and is in contact with his immediate family. “The campus community including students and staff is in a state of grief. Counselling has been offered to all affected, and our full support will be provided in all instances,” Madiba said.

Kamva’s sister Wandi Dasi posted a moving message on her Facebook account. “Wasizimela sthandwa sethu 😭wamka mntaka mama💔 soze siphinde sikubone nyan na Kamva 💔😭wasishiya neslonda esingasoze siphole 🥺I ntando ka Thixo ibuhlungu ❤Rest in peace ,We love you 😍,” the message reads.
