Three female police officers were shot and seriously injured outside Junxion mall in Philippi, Cape Town earlier today. The officers were shot where in the parking area after they just parked their vehicle.
Eyewitnesses claim that a group of six robbers were fleeing the scene of a store robbery and encountered a police van, firing several shots at the officers. Onlookers believe that the police were not aware of the robbery.
“They may have came to the mall for something else but when robbers saw the van they thought the officers were after them. They fired several bullets and managed to get into their getaway car and fled the scene,” said an eyewitness.
The male cop, the driver of the van was unharmed, but the women were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. The suspects fled the scene in a silver Opel LDV with false registration plates and remain at large. Police are asking members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the shooters.
MEC Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen condemned the incident and wished speedy recovery for the injured cops.
“Criminals are showing that they have little to no regard for those mandated to serve and protect. As such, we should all ensure that elements such as these are not allowed to roam our streets, and instead end up behind bars. No one has yet been arrested. These criminals need to be arrested so that they can face the full might of the law,” added Allen
