A suspected thief swallowed an alleged stolen neck chain while police were chasing him. The man swallowed the chain to hide the evidence of the crime.
The incident took place on Orange Street in Cape Town CBD on Thursday 1 December.
Law enforcement spokesman Wayne Dyason said officers were informed about a person who was mugged of a neck chain.
Dyason said:”Law Enforcement officers were on patrol in the CBD near Orange Street when they were flagged down by a member of the public. They were informed of a mugging that took place in that vicinity.
“The officers were given a description of the suspect and spotted him They gave chase and the 21-year-old suspect while running swallowed the chain. He was promptly caught and arrested.
“This is the second such an incident where muggers rob suspects and then upon being pursued swallow the chain,” he said.
