Shootings on the Cape Flats have left many people terrified. This comes after a five-year-old boy was shot and injured while a 17-year-old boy lost his life on Saturday 04 February.

Police spokeswoman Captain Nowonga Sukwana confirmed the shooting.

“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident Saturday morning 2023-02-04 at about 10:00 in Thames Avenue, Manenberg, where a 17-year-old boy was shot and fatally wounded and a five-year-old boy shot and wounded are under investigation. According to reports, the victims were standing in the road when unknown suspects entered the road in a vehicle and started shooting,” said Sukwana.

Sukwana said the teenager was declared deceased on the scene while the five-year-old boy was taken to a medical facility in critical condition.

“Manenberg police registered murder and attempted murder cases for investigation. Anyone with any information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on ‪08600 10111,” she added.

MEC of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen condemned the shooting.

“I’m appalled by Saturday’s shooting incident in Manenberg. A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot, while a 5-year-old child is in critical condition in a hospital.

“We cannot allow these criminal elements to torment our communities like this. It is alleged that the youngsters were caught in gang crossfire. It is unacceptable that these heartless gangsters continue to torment our communities like this.

“They do not belong in our areas, as they add no value, nor do they lift or build our communities in a positive way. All they do is cause harm and pain,” said Allen.
