The taxi that overturned on N2 close to the Cape Town International Airport earlier this morning has killed one passenger. The taxi which had 14 passengers was heading towards Cape Town CBD.
According to police, the taxi was carrying 14 passengers, seven males and seven females at the time of the incident. One man died while 13 others were rushed to the hospital.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the accident. He said a case of culpable homicide has been opened against the driver.
“Gugulethu police are investigating a culpable homicide case following an accident on 2025-01-10 at about 06:00 on the N2 direction to Cape Town, where an unidentified male died due to injuries sustained and 12 other injured. All the injured passengers were taken to different hospitals around Cape Town, the deceased were taken to a nearby mortuary.
“According to reports the taxi was driving direction to Cape Town when the driver loses control, and the accident occurred,” said Van Wyk. He added that the deceased passenger died at the scene.
Earlier an Ezitshisayo source said the situation was not looking good. “It looks like the taxi overturned and landed on its side. There were cries and screams for help at the time we passed by. It did not look good, but we hope there are no fatalities. The taxi has a CODETA sticker. It looks like it was coming from Khayelitsha,” said our source.
City of Cape Town Traffic Police spokesman Kevin Jacobs confirmed that the officers are busy at the scene.
“Cape Town Traffic Service is attending to an accident scene on the N2 inbound before Airport Approach Road, where one minibus taxi overturned. The bus lane and the centre lane is obstructed. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution,” said Jacobs.
