Two City of Cape Town Metro cops are traumatised after they were attacked in Philippi on Wednesday morning.

The attack happened around 11:30 while they were issuing a fine to a motorist in Stock Roads.

Mayco member for Safety and Security Jean-Pierre Smith said the officers were robbed of their firearm and an EPIC device used for issuing fines. Smith said the officers stopped a motorist for violating some traffic laws on the corner of Rochester and Stock Road. While they were attending to the motorist, two armed men attacked them.

“The suspects opened fire, and one of the officers fired off a single shot in response. The officer sustained an injury to his hand and is currently receiving medical treatment,” said Smith.

He added that the officers will receive adequate support in order for them to recover from the traumatic experience.

The stolen EPIC device was however tracked and recovered at the nearby informal settlement. The City is urging anyone with information about the robbery anonymously on 0800 110077.

Meanwhile last night Tuesday 08 March, Metro Police were nearly attacked in Hanover Park after arresting a drug dealer. Smith said: “Yesterday our members responded to the rapid gunfire but on approach, drove into an ambush situation.”
