Man arrested for attempting to burn a bus

An integrated operation in Khayelitsha and surrounds this morning resulted in 16 arrests including a suspect arrested for trying to set alight a bus.

The operation came on the back of the unrest in the area earlier this week during the two-day stay-away by taxi operators.

Numerous roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints were set up around Khayelitsha, involving City enforcement agencies and SAPS.

Officers issued 757 fines, impounded 15 vehicles in Khayelitsha and one more in Delft, and made 16 arrests.

Of those arrested, 13 had outstanding warrants, while one person was arrested on a charge of fraud and another arrest was drug-related.

During the operation, information was received of an attempted attack on a Golden Arrow bus, carrying passengers.

A suspect in a Toyota Quantum tried to set the bus alight, but was disturbed by Law Enforcement – he fled the scene, but was arrested at one of the vehicle checkpoints a short while later.

A case of attempted arson was registered at Lingelethu-West SAPS.
