Residents from Phola Park in the Philippi area, Cape Town were left with more questions than answers. This is after a girl who was attending a birthday party hosted by a friend was found “raped and dead”.
The 18-year-old Chumasande Majija was amongst a group of young people who were celebrating a birthday party which started on Saturday 29 June till Sunday. In a shocking twist of events, residents said they were notified that one girl had died at the party.
A resident who spoke to Ezitshisayo said they rushed to the shack were the party was taking place. “We found the girl lying on the bed, but her tights were lowered down to her knees. She didn’t have any stab wounds and I suspect she was raped and strangled to death,” said the resident.
Family member Akhona Majija said he was at home when he was asked to rush to Phola Park. To his shock, he found out that his niece had died.
“I’m shocked and confused because since I arrived here I haven’t got answers as to what happened. Others say she was found inside the shack on the bed, while others said she was found outside,” he said.
The owner of the shack who didn’t want to be named said his son had a birthday, so he left them in the house and went to sleep. “I’m also in the dark. I don’t know what happened,” said the shack owner.
Ezitshisayo could not speak with those who were at the party as they were busy with the police.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk said an inquest docket has been opened.
“Philippi-East police registered an inquest following the discovery of the body of an 18 year old female on 2024-06-30 at a premises in Phola Park. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Investigation continues,” said Van Wyk.
