Residents from KTC area in Gugulethu are traumatised after a peaceful evening turned tragic on Monday 24 September. This is after five individuals were shot and killed in the area while enjoying a casual gathering in their cars.
The incident occurred on Fenqe Street at approximately 17:15, sending shockwaves through the local community. Among the victims, identified by authorities, is a well-respected 46-year-old lawyer from the area and a prison warder hailing from the Hazeldene area in Philippi. The identities of the remaining victims have yet to be disclosed.
When law enforcement authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered the lifeless bodies of the five men inside two VW Polo vehicles. Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the murder of the five men is currently under investigation by the Provincial Organised Crime detectives.
“Reports at the disposal of police indicate that the victims were sitting inside two vehicles when another vehicle, occupied by armed men, appeared, and shots were fired at the occupants of the two vehicles. Five men between the ages of 46 and 52 were subsequently killed,” said Potelwa.
While the motive behind the attack remains unknown, law enforcement officers are actively working to gather evidence and identify the perpetrators. The incident has left the community deeply unsettled and mourning the loss of five lives.
As the investigation unfolds, police has urged the public to assist with any information that may bring the perpetrators to justice.
