A group of men have come together to gather diapers for underprivileged kids around Cape Town. The Diaper Drive initiative led by an organisation called Father Figure managed to gather over 100 diaper packs in Gugulethu on Sunday, March 31.
Father Figure chairperson Nathi Mahlanyana said the initiative is aimed at fighting diaper poverty. He said, six out of 10 children in South Africa do not have diapers and as men, they decided to do something.
“There are children out there who cannot afford even one diaper a day. We decided that lets do something about it,” said Mahlanyana.
The organisation is targeting 25 000 diapers during this current initiative. Diapers that were collected on Sunday will be given to poor families in Gugulethu,Grassy Park and Joe Slovo in Milnerton.
The Ny91 Over 30s Social Soccer League were also part of the diaper gathering initiative. Kasi Raiders also donated some diapers.
Community members who attended initiative welcomed the initiative mostly because it was initiated by men. Ayanda Dyosi from Gugulethu said she was happy to see men in the forefront of gathering diapers.
Organisations such as TooMuchWifi and Score took part during the initiative.
The Ny91 Over 30s Social Soccer League also took part in the initiative as a way to celebrate their own member Bobby Gonca who passed away.
