Three construction workers are recovering in hospital after they were shot at a construction site in Delft on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened around 3 pm while the workers were working on the housing site along Symphony Way.

According to eyewitnesses, two men shot the workers and ran to a getaway car that was waiting for them.

“Clearly they were just sending a message, they didn’t want to kill them. They didn’t rob them of anything but they just shot and left. It looks like they were sending a signal, whatever their message is they were not robbers,” said a resident.

A few months ago when the project started there were disagreements between residents from the area and construction companies.

Residents were demanding that community members in the area must be employed in the area than companies to bring workers from outside the area.

Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident.

“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Saturday afternoon at about 15h45 in Magalies Street, Leiden, Delft where three adult males were shot and wounded are under investigation.

“According to reports the victims were busy working at a construction site when they came under attack. The victims were shot in their legs and were taken to a medical facility for treatment. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Twigg.

Twigg said Delft police registered attempted murder cases for investigation.
