Three people have died in a shack fire in two seperate incidents that happened last night and early this morning.

The fires happened in Du Noon last night o6 December and Samora Machel early this morning.

According to Jermaine Carelse, the spokesman for Fire and Rescue department, the first fire happened around 11pm.
Fire fighters were called in Siyahlala Informal Settlement around 10:50 pm.

They dispatched firefighters from Milnerton, Atlantis, Goodwood, Brooklyn and Kraaifontein. The crews managed to extinguish the blaze by just after 1am.

“Several structures were destroyed and a number of residents were displaced. Sadly, Firefighters found the body of a man while busy with mopping up operations,” said Carelse.

Whike busy in Du Noon, another fire broke in Samora Machel. This second incident was reported at 00.30am. Carelse said one structure was on fire in Jeff Masemola Road and people were trapped inside.

“Crews from Mitchells Plain and Gugulethu extinguished by 01:25 and the bodies of a man and woman were discovered among the debris,” he said.

Both these scenes were handed over to the South African Police Service, said Carelse.

Meanwhile,last week three children between six and 15 from Endlovini in Khayelitsha died in shack fire. The fourth one is fighting for her life in hospital.
