Jackye Majawie takes a cleaner to court over toilet.

A LGBTQI activist took a cleaner to court after she stopped her from using a female toilet last year. Jackye Majawie(36) who used to be a man transitioned into a woman, a journey she took nine years ago.

She successfully changed from being a man to a woman and her identity card was also changed to fit her new gender. Majawie wanted to use a toilet at Golden Acre mall in Cape Town in March 2023 when a cleaner stopped her.

The lady cleaner told her she was not supposed to use a female toilet but that of males. She tried to force her way, but the woman kicked her out. Majawie said her human rights were infringed by another woman after she refused her access to the toilet. She took the matter to the Equality Court where she is suing the cleaner.

Majawie who is the founder of Majawie Safe Space that caters for the needs of the LGBTQI+ community around Delft said the LGBTQI+ community is not protected enough. She has been doing several awareness programs around Delft and surrounding areas to speak about the challenges her community faces.

The court case against the cleaner happened on Wednesday 17 July and was postponed to 2 August.
