A robber has been shot dead in Philippi East after attempting to rob a woman of a kasi businessman. The incident happened outside Goal supermarket on Saturday 03 June.
According to an eyewitness report, four men ambushed a woman who was walking from her shop to the car. Four men tried to rob her of her phone and handbag. One robber allegedly pointed a toy gun at the woman. However, when the woman’s husband, who was already in the car, saw what was happening, he drew a gun and fired shots at the robbers. He shot one of them who died at the scene, while the other three managed to escape unharmed.
An eyewitness said: “The husband was very quick to act and shot her him dead. Others ran away from the scene. The businessman and his wife were leaving the premises when the suspects tried to grab the phone and handbag.”
Many in the local area have expressed their relief that the robbers have finally met their match. An eyewitness who has a stall outside the complex said that people get robbed on several occasions, and the robbers get away with it. “This time around, they met their match. They terrorize people here every day,” he added.
The police spokesman Frederick Van Wyk has confirmed the incident and said that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation. “According to reports, the owners of the shop were about to leave the premises when they were approached by unknown suspects who robbed them of a cellular telephone. The unknown suspect was fatally wounded while his accomplices fled the scene. The incident is the subject of a police investigation,” he said.
