Mninikhaya Mvuli (56) appeared in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s court this morning charged with five counts of culpable homicide and a count of reckless driving after the vehicle he was driving was involved in an accident that killed five learners.
The 56-year-old learner transport driver, who is also a pastor, was transporting children to various schools in the Mitchells Plain area when the accident occurred on Tuesday, 30 May. The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed that they will oppose his bail application. His case has been postponed until next Monday, 5 June 2023, for the bail application hearing. Mvuli’s family members were present in court and stated that he is a mfundisi who does not drink or smoke.
An NGO called Abigail Women’s Movement has organized a prayer meeting at the scene of the accident in memory of the deceased children on Friday, 2 June. The prayer meeting will also be attended by the ward councilor of the area.
The community of Mitchells Plain has been left shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of the five school children. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, and the community is calling for justice to be served.
Last month another accident involving school learners occurred on AZ Berman Drive where one learner lost his life. The latest accident involved a light motor vehicle, a taxi, and a Golden Arrow bus.
