The City of Cape Town has announced that they will be offering free and discounted rates for qualifying low-income residents.
Mayor Geordin Lewis-Hill explained that pensioners with a household income of less than R22,000 per month and those living off social grants will be eligible to receive help. He added that for those with a household income of less than R7500 per month, they qualify for indigent relief or pensioners relief, which includes totally free rates and discounted service charges.
Those who believe they qualify for relief are urged to visit their nearest municipal office, contact their ward councilor, or visit their local subcouncil office. Alternatively, they can fill in the forms on the City’s website and email the completed forms to [email protected].
The Mayor emphasised that applicants should bring their ID card and bank statements for the last three months, a bond statement for the past three months (if they have one). Those who work can bring their latest pay slip or a letter from their employer if they are employed. Lewis-Hill said indigent support and rates relief are designed to help Capetonians.
The Mayor said many low-income residents are struggling to make ends meet in these difficult times. Lewis-Hill added that the assistance will provide some relief for families and hopefully help them get back on their feet.
