Police in George are investigating the murder of a well-known taxi boss Welile Mbudede who was the chairman of Uncedo Taxi Association in George.
Mbudede was shot outside his home in Thembalethu on Wednesday 1 March around 20:45. He had just arrived home when two gunmen fired several shots killing him on the spot. They also shot his son on the leg as he was running from the shooting scene.
Uncedo’s secretary Vuyani Kahlule said the death of their chairperson is shocking. ” It is difficult for us as an organisation, nobody was expecting this. The last time we checked the chairman was attending a meeting with Santaco. Now we are shocked to hear that he is dead. We are shocked and we ask ourselves when will be my day because we don’t know what is going on,” he said.
Sergeant Christopher Spies, the police spokesman in Southern Cape confirmed the incident. He said no arrests have been made yet. He said the two gunmen opened several bullets at the 60-year-old Mbudede.
“Two men opened fire on a 60-year-old man and a family member outside their house. The family member managed to run into the house but not before he was shot in the leg,” he said.
Spies said Mbudede suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. Police opened a murder and an attempted murder docket.
“The motive for the attack is yet to be established and forms part of the ongoing police investigation. All leads are being followed up.”
