As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month this August, Nomveliso Qaqa-Poswa stands out as a remarkable example of young female leadership. At just 29 years old, Nomveliso has become the principal of LEAP Science and Maths School in Klipfontein, a significant achievement, given that many principals are mostly over 50.
Nomveliso’s journey in education began early. Born and raised in Langa, she was already teaching informal lessons before she even completed her university degree. She helped high school learners from her kasi with their math and science homework and prepared them for exams. This dedication to help others helped her stay focused despite challenges at home.
Nomveliso earned a BTech teaching degree from Cape Peninsula University of Technology and later completed a postgraduate certificate in Physical Science at the University of Western Cape. After graduating, she began her teaching career at Vuyiseka High School in Philiphi. She then returned to LEAP Science and Maths School, her former school, where she made a significant impact.
Last year, Nomveliso’s hard work and dedication were recognized when she was appointed as a deputy principal. This year, she was promoted to the role of principal, a testament to her exceptional skills and commitment to education. She credits her success to God’s blessings, her relentless effort, and her deep passion for teaching.
Her rise to principal at such a young age serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting how determination and passion can lead to extraordinary achievements. During Women’s Month, Nomveliso story shines as a powerful reminder of the impact that young women can have in shaping their communities and inspiring future generations.
Nomveliso said one’s living conditions must not determine whom they should be in the future.
