A man from Driftsands has been arrested in connection with the murder of mfundisi inside his church two weeks ago.
The 40-year-old man who was arrested was a close friend to mfundisi and many people from Drifsands are shocked by the incident.
“For him to join St Johns it was because of ubaba Diya which he killed. He was a close friend to baba uDiya and we are all shocked,” a source told Ezitshisayo.
According to our source, mfundisi was killed on Friday 12 July and the suspect was arrested on Monday 15. This is after police found text messages in mfundisi Diya’s phone which came from the arrested man. It is alleged that one of the messages read “there are homes that are going to be closed, I’m tired of evil people”.
“I think the message was meant for mfundisi but he didn’t understand what it meant. On Wednesday the suspect confessed while at the police station that he indeed sent inkabi to kill his friend. He said he was not alone but with other two people. They paid the killers to shoot mfundisi,” said the source.
Allegedly, the arrested suspect told police that he killed mfundisi “because I heard people saying he was going to kill me, so I decided to kill him first”.
“We know the killer, when he had a problem, he would run to mfundisi Diya’s church. He was more than a friend, but a brother and we are shocked that he killed him just like that,” the source said.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed that a suspect has been arrested.
“This office hereby confirms a murder case where the 38 year old Pastor was shot and killed at a premises in S19, Covid Informal settlement. Provincial Detectives are currently investigating the case. A 40 year old suspect was arrested and appeared in Court on 2024-07-23 ,” said Van Wyk.
