Driver jumps out of burning truck during N1 truck accident

A truck driver escaped from a burning truck that saw two other drivers losing their lives on Wednesday 24 July. The incident that happened between Touwsriver and De Doorns led to serious delays on the busy highway.

A video that is circulating on social media shows trucks on fire and fire firefighters trying to extinguish the blaze. Western Cape Mobility Department spokeswoman Muneera Allie said the accident is under investigation find out what happened.

“Western Cape Traffic confirms a major incident on the N1, close to Touwsrivier, on 24 July at about 20h30 – where 3 heavy motor vehicles were involved in a collision. 2 fatalities are confirmed(police update says 3). Further details of the incident are still being investigated. All teams are on site. A stop-n-go is currently in place,” she said.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the incident.
“Circumstances surrounding an accident last night (Wednesday, 2024-07-24) at about 19:35 near Touwsrivier on N1- National Road are under investigation. According to reports, the accident happened outside Touwsrivier direction De Doorns where three trucks were involved in. Upon SAPS’s arrival on the scene, the trucks were already burning. One of the victims managed to jump out of a burning truck unharmed, and three others burned in the other two trucks.

“A culpable homicide case was opened for investigation. Investigations continues. The road is open for traffic coming from Cape Town. People going to Cape Town must make use of the R46 Ceres Road.
