Teacher killed on her way to school
A teacher was shot and killed in Eastern Cape on Monday.

Lulama Groom, a teacher at Maxaka Junior Secondary School in Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape, was tragically shot and killed while on her way to work on Monday, 20 January. The community has been left in shock.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education expressed their sadness over the loss of the dedicated teacher.

Education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima confirmed that the shooting took place around 7.45am when Groom was dropping off another teacher at Dingilizwe Senior Primary School.

“Our hearts go out to her family, colleagues, and students during this difficult time. We also want to thank the teacher from Dingilizwe Senior Primary School who witnessed the incident and quickly sought help,” Mtima said.

The Department of Education has sent psychologists to offer support to the affected teachers and students. Mtima added that authorities should thoroughly investigate this crime and bring the responsible person to justice. He also paid tribute to Groom, saying her dedication to education will inspire others.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that a murder investigation is underway. The incident occurred on the R61 next to Mdlankomo Location on Monday morning.

Mawisa explained that Groom, 56, was driving her red Polo with a passenger when she stopped to drop the passenger off. During misty weather, someone with a firearm shot her, and she died at the scene.

A murder case has been opened, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward. Those with information can contact their local police station or CrimeStop on 08600 10111.

Meanwhile a principal from Ekuthuleni Primary School in Kraaifontein was shot and killed on Thursday 23 January. The incident that happened in the school yard has left both school kids and teachers traumatised.
