Two people ended up dying at a funeral in Cape Town on Saturday.

Cape Town residents are shaken after two men were killed at a funeral on Saturday 08 February 2025. The incident happened at Beverly Court, Ravensmead on the Cape Flats.

According to one mourner, it was almost 9 am when the body of the deceased man was expected to arrive. A man dressed in black who was amongst the mourners pulled out a gun and shot at the father of the deceased man causing chaos at the funeral.

The shooter tried to run away but mourners quickly caught and disarmed him before beating him up to death at the funeral. “It was tragic, things happened very fast and by the time the police arrived, the man was already dead. Residents and mourners moered him so hard and fast,” said a source that spoke to Ezitshisayo.

A funeral ended in death of two more people on Saturday.

A video circulating on social media shows the body of the deceased father lying and covered with a white sheet with blood flowing while people gathered around it crying. On the other side, the body of the shooter is also seen lying uncovered a few meters away unattended.

The Ravensmead Community Police Forum (CPF) spokesman Lucian Davids condemned the incident. “This morning, a father was shot dead at the funeral of his son. The perpetrator was caught by community members present, disarmed and beaten to death. These are the two bodies in the video that has circulated on the internet this morning,” said Davids.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the incident which he said is under investigation.

“Ravensmead registered two separate murder cases for investigation following a shooting incident that occurred this morning Saturday, 2025-02-08 at 08:45 at Beverly Court, Ravensmead. A 54 year old man was shot and fatally wounded by a 26 year old man. The alleged shooter was beaten to death on the scene of the incident.The motive is believed to be gang related.

“According to reports the deceased attended his son’s funeral at the mentioned address when the suspect shot and fatally wounded him with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. The suspect then ran away but was chased and apprehended by the community who attended the funeral and was beaten to death,” said Van Wyk.
