A police officer is set to appear in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town after allegedly pouring boiling water on his wife. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, August 6, left the woman severely burned.
She is currently in the hospital and unable to speak. The couple reportedly had an argument before the attack, but the details of the argument are not clear.
The officer involved is a detective sergeant stationed at Claremont police station. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that they are investigating the case.
Meanwhile, another officer, Sergeant Basil Nathan Williams, is also facing legal issues. He is scheduled to appear in Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Friday, August 16, for a bail application. Williams has been charged with assaulting his sister and other family members. His case was previously heard on Monday, August 5, and has been postponed for the bail hearing.
It is reported that this is not the first time Williams has attacked his sister. Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt General Thembisile Patekile expressed concern, stating that police should set a good example and that it is troubling to see officers involved in crimes, especially during efforts to combat gender-based violence.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Eric Ntabazila said the State will oppose bail for Williams, who faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
