A police Constable has been shot and killed after he responded to a complaint in Grassy Park on Thursday 01 December in the evening.
A 26-year-old officer Ashwin Pedro was with his colleague when the incident happened around 17:45.
According to police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut, the deceased officer responded to a complaint of a man with a firearm in Blackbird Avenue. On arrival, an argument ensued between the officers and the man.
The man shot the officer in the chest, took his service pistol and ran away. Officers including the anti-gang unit and Hawks hunted for the killer.
Before midnight on Thursday, the suspected aged 42 was found and arrested at his hiding place in Ravensmead. Police found the man with the pistol he had stolen from the scene after killing the officer.
MEC of Community safety Reagan Allen thanked police for the smooth response to arrest the suspect.
“I commend SAPS and all other law enforcement agencies for their swift action in ensuring the arrest of the suspect,” he said.
He also sends condolences to Constable Pedro’s family.
Traut said Hawks are still investigating more on what happened leading to the shooting.
This incident happens while police are looking for another person who allegedly killed an officer in Samora Machel in September.
