Njongo wanted peace but Khayelitsha girl (17) stabbed him to death

The family of Njongo Qolo(16) from Khayelitsha is in pain after he was stabbed by a teenage girl on three weeks ago. He was trying to stop a fight when one of the girls that were attacking his friends stabbed him on the chest. His two friends managed to run for safety.

The incident happened in SST area in Town 2 in Khayelitsha on Saturday 25 February 2022. According to the family, Njongo who was a grade 10 learner. He was stabbed while on a street corner with his two friends. Allegedly Njongo and his two friends were approached by four girls who insulted and started attacking one of the boys.

Njongo attempted to stop the fight but the knife touting girl turned and stabbed him in the chest. It is alleged that she didn’t have a knife the beginning of the scuffle but it was handed to her by one of the friends.

“The doctors said the knife wound slightly missed his heart because the wound was so deep,” said Njongo’s makhazi Noxolo Mangaliso.

Mangaliso said after Njongo was stabbed he was rushed to Khayelitsha District Hospital but his state deteriorated. He was transferred to Tygerberg hospital were he later succumbed to his wound and he also suffered brain damage.

According to residents in the area, the girls who killed Njongo are known for terrorizing school going boys in the area. Allegedly, they accuse the boys for showing off and “want to look better” than them. The girls dropped out of school last year and they have been roaming the streets doing nothing but targeting boys.

According to the family, Njongo was not part of the group these girls were targeting but he was unfortunately on the wrong place at wrong time.

“We run a vegetable stand and Njongo is always there when he comes back from school every day. He was not part of these groupings and it’s unfortunate that he was killed over something he doesn’t know. We are hurt,” she said.

Njongo’s family said they spoke to the mother of the accused 17 year old girl who also told them that the girl doesn’t live with her anymore. “She told us that she also have given up on her child and she even scared of her. She moved out of her house last year and she was sleeping at her friends house,” she said.
