Residents from Covid-19 informal settlement in Driftsands, Cape Town are shocked after pastor was killed inside his church on Friday 12 July. The incident happened around 7pm. Residents said they heard gunshots at the church but didn’t know what was happening.
However, after a few minutes, they saw three men running away from the church and disappeared in between shacks.
A church member who spoke to Ezitshisayo said pastor had already concluded his day and was about to take a bath. Three men arrived, though he didn’t want to assist them since it was late, he ended up asking them to enter inside the church.
The church member who was at the church at the time, said he had the pastor asking the men to take off their hats. “After that, gunshots followed, and I ran away. I less that a minute, the men came out, running away from the scene. When I went inside the church, mfundisi was lying in a pool of blood,” said the source.
A community leader Andile Beka said they are shocked by the incident. “Crime is getting out of hands because a church is a holly ground that must be respected. It is shocking that thieves do not even respect the house of God anymore,” said Beka.
Ezitshisayo visited the church on Sunday but family members were not read to speak about the incident.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk said investigations are underway to arrest the suspects.
“Mfuleni police registered a murder following a shooting incident on 2024-07-12 at about 19:00 at a premises in S19, Covid Informal settlement, where a 38-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.
“The suspects\s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive behind the shooting is unknown at this stage. An appeal is hereby made to anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Van Wyk.
