A man has been arrested for raping an elderly woman aged 101 years old. The incident happened last week on Saturday in Zaaiplaas area in Sekhukhune District in Limpopo province on 27 July 2024.
According to reports, the 27-year-old suspect who lives in the same area with the victim went to her house early in the morning around 5am. He broke the window and entered the room which makhulu was sleeping. He raped makhulu and strangled her before fleeing from the scene.
Police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said after the incident, they managed to hunt and caught the susoect and arrested him.
The suspect has since appeared before Zaaiplaas Periodical Court on Monday, on charges of house breaking and rape. He was remanded in custody until 08 August 2024 for possible bail application.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident.
“Reports indicate that the 101-year-old victim was asleep when she was awakened by the suspect who tried to strangle her before he raped her. The suspect, who broke the window to gain entry, fled the scene after the incident,” said Ledwaba.
Hadebe said the incident is disturbing and shocking.
“This despicable act of violence against a vulnerable member of our community is met with the full force of our commitment to justice. The rape of an elderly woman is not just a crime against an individual but a deeply disturbing assault on our society’s values and sense of safety,” said Hadebe.
