Police in Cape Town have arrested a young man who is identified as Luvo for assaulting his grandmother. The incident happened in June and he was arrested on Wednesday 03 July at night after the incident went viral on social media.
According to police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut, the incident happened happened in June and cops were called to the scene.However, on arrival the family decided to turn officers away.
“SAPS were summoned to the scene, but it is said that the family took the matter in their own hands and refused police assistance. The severity of the matter was realised when a video of the incident was circulating on the internet, and on this basis SAPS intervened and opened a case docket on behalf of the victim,” said Traut.
Cops said after arresting Luvo on Wednesday 03 July at night, they visited makhulu who is currently in hospital where she is treated for another illness not related to the assault. According to police, makhulu refused to press charges against Luvo.
“Kraaifontein police learnt of a video that went viral on social media platforms where a teenager is seen assaulting a senior citizen, and registered a case docket for the incident last night. The victim who is from Wallacedene in Kraaifontein was traced where she is being treated in hospital for an ailment not related to the assault, but she declined to submit a statement,” said Traut.
Minister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe condemned the incident.
