Teachers and learners who cheated during matric examinations using Whatsaap must be punished, the National Association of School Governing Bodies(NASGB) said.
Over 300 students and teachers mostly in Mpumalanga area are accused of cheating. It is alleged that learners paid R1500 to teachers for exam answers. The learners allegedly managed to sneak into exam rooms with their phones.
Matakanye Matakanye national secretary of NASGB condemned the actions.
“We want to condemn plagiarism with the strongest of terms. We even call all the agencies involved to ensure they thoroughly investigate this matter and those who are found to be breaking the law must be taken to task,” he said.
Elijah Mhlanga the spokesman for the Basic Education department said they will investigate the matter.

Mpumalanga provincial department of Education shared a statement on Monday 12 December statement.
The Department is disturbed that there are people and forces who are hell-bent to do anything and everything to bypass systems put in place to uphold the credibility and integrity of the public examinations.
“The good thing is that the Department has advanced and sophisticated processes in place to identify such people or forces and to expose them for who and what they are,” the statement reads.
Democratic Alliance MP Boxolile Nodada said the department must investigate and conclude before the release of results on 19 January.
