UPDATE: Police explains how Khayelitsha neighbourhood member killed during patrol

Monwabisi Mkhutshulwa (51), a member of the Ezimfeneni Neighbourhood Watch, was shot and killed on Friday night, 17 January 2025, while patrolling the streets of eNkanini in Makhaza. According to police, the patrollers were ambushed by a group of men. Mkhutshulwa was struck in the shoulder and leg and died at the scene, while other patrollers managed to escape.

A resident living nearby described hearing gunfire and screams but was too afraid to investigate until police arrived. “I saw Monwabisi lying on the ground. He was an active patroller and deeply involved in our community. It was terrifying,” said the resident.

Ward 95 councillor Ayanda Tetani expressed shock at the murder, describing Mkhutshulwa as a dedicated community leader. “His death is a major loss for our area, which already struggles with crime. This tragedy highlights the risks our community faces,” Tetani said.

The Makhaza Community Police Forum (CPF) called the killing a painful reminder of the dangers patrollers face. “Their bravery is essential for our safety. We urge law enforcement to thoroughly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” said a CPF spokesperson.

Police confirmed the murder is under investigation, and Western Cape Police Commissioner Lt Gen TE Patekile condemned the killing as a senseless attack on those serving their communities.
