Cape Town police arrested two men after a high-speed chase on Sunday, 19 January 2025, leading to the confiscation of mandrax tablets worth an estimated R1.5 million.

The incident began when officers from the Maitland Flying Squad spotted a Golf 6 GTI being driven recklessly on the N1 highway. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said officers requested backup and kept the vehicle under surveillance.

When the driver noticed the police presence, he sped off, triggering a high-speed chase. Officers forced the car to stop near the Sable Road exit, where they detained the two male occupants, aged 40 and 37.

“The occupants became restless but were quickly brought under control. The members continued to search the vehicle and the occupants during which they confiscated a consignment of mandrax tablets with an estimated value of R1.5 million. They detained two males aged 40 and 37 for the possession of drugs,” said Swartbooi.

The suspects are expected to appear in Cape Town Magistrates Court as soon as they are charged.
