The Western Cape Mobility Department is offering free vehicle inspections for scholar transporters as schools reopen. The two-day program starts from today Monday, 13 January, transporters can take their vehicles to the Gene Louw Traffic Training College in Cape Town or the Beaufort West Vehicle Testing Centre.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku explained that the goal is to keep learners safe. He encouraged transport operators to take advantage of this opportunity to prevent accidents and breakdowns.
Scholar transporter Mandla Mjekula from Philippi welcomed the initiative. He plans to take his two taxis for free inspections, noting that it would normally cost him over R1000 to have them tested. “This is a great help because January is a tough month financially. We haven’t received payments from parents since November,” he said.
The department clarified that this is not a full roadworthy test but a basic safety check. The inspections will focus on important parts such as tyres, brakes, lights, suspension, wipers, and licence discs.
Parent Nandipha Msila from Khayelitsha emphasized the importance of this service. Her children use scholar transport daily, and she urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. “We trust drivers to keep our kids safe,” she said.
The inspections will take place on 13 and 14 January. Transporters unable to attend can contact the department on telephone number 021 983 1500 or [email protected] to arrange a convenient time for an inspection.
