Gunshots at funeral ended in tears
Two were arrested at a funeral Engcobo.

Police in Eastern Cape have arrested two men after they were caught with firearms at a funeral. The incident happened on Saturday 10 August in the morning while people were attending a funeral at Goso Administrative Area in Engcobo.

Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said members from the Police Public Order (POP) and the Tactical Response Team(TRT) arrested two suspects. The arrested men are ages 42 and 46.

The police were at a funeral and heard random gunshots. They looked around and found the two men with illegal guns and bullets. The two appeared in court yesterday 12 August.

In South Africa, gunshots at funerals are often a way to honor or show respect for the deceased, particularly in some communities. This practice, known as “funeral gunfire,” can have cultural or traditional significance.
However, it can also be linked to issues like gang violence or personal disputes.

While some see it as a ritualistic gesture, it can be dangerous and is illegal if the firearms are unlicensed or used recklessly. Authorities often crack down on this practice to ensure safety and uphold the law.
In March 2024, residents were left scared after “over 500” gunshots were fired in the air at a funeral of an alleged Nyanga gang member in Cape Town.
