A truck driver has shot and killed two young men who were trying to rob him in Montclair near Mitchells Plain on Thursday 08 August. According to onlookers who spoke to Ezitshisayo, the driver had a delivery in the area. The incident happened at the corner of Clivia and Geranium Street around two in the afternoon.
While he was busy with the delivery, he was approached by four men who were armed and threatened him. They robbed him of his bank cards, phone and other belongings. When they were about to hijack the vehicle, the driver pulled out a gun that was in his possession and shot two of the suspects, killing them at the scene. Two others managed to run away.
When police went to the scene later on, they found out that the firearm that was next to one of the deceased was a toy gun.
A resident from the area Yanga Lubisa said they heard gunshots but didn’t go out of the house immediately.
“When the gunshots died down we went out and saw two men dead on the street. One had a gun next to him while the other one was dead at a distance from the incident happened. The driver was still with his gun in his hand and was on a phone when we went to the scene,” said Lubisa.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk said the incident happened in the afternoon on the 8th of August.
“Lentegeur police registered an inquest, attempted carjacking and armed robbery following an incident on 2024-08-08 at 13:50 at the corner of Clivia and Geranium Streets, Montclair, Lentegeur. According to reports, the victim was busy doing a delivery with his company vehicle when he was approached by four unknown males who pointed him with a firearm.
“They threatened him, and he started to fight with them. They took his cellphone and bankcards. He then took out it his own firearm and fired several shots at them wounding two fatally while the remaining two fled the scene in an unknown direction. The suspects attempted to hijack his vehicle. The motive is believed to be hijacking and robbery. SAPS members found a toy gun on the scene, which was handed in as exhibit and further processing,” said Van Wyk.
