Police arrested three Table View cops on Monday after they allegedly beat a suspect to death in holding cells. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) made the arrests following a lengthy investigation.
A cop who spoke to Ezitshisayo said the incident occurred late last year. It is alleged that a Sergeant and two Constables apprehended two suspects for possessing an illegal firearm in Table View. An argument ensued when one of the suspects protested the arrest, claiming he was unarmed.
Subsequently, the officers transported the suspects to the holding cells. They allegedly subjected the victim to assault. The victim was severely injured and ultimately died from the injuries sustained during the assault.
Realizing the severity of the situation, the officers transported the victim to Dunoon clinic. However, upon arrival, the victim was already deceased.
IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed the arrests. She said the arrest happened on Monday and the suspects appeared in court on Tuesday 27 February.
