A taxi shooting left residents traumatised

Residents from Siyahlala informal settlement in Philippi were shocked after a taxi driver was shot and killed in a taxi in their kasi. The incident happened on Saturday 10 February early in the morning along Sheffield Road. Another man who was at the passenger side of the taxi was rushed to the hospital.

A resident who witnessed the incident is traumatised because of the heavy guns that she saw. “The taxi was parked, and the two-armed men just arrived at the driver’s side and started firing shots at the driver. They were carrying AK47 firearms. I have seen those kind of guns on TV, it was my first time to see them in real life,” said the woman who was walking towards the taxi just before the shooting.

She told Ezitshisayo that she ran for cover as she feared for her life. Another resident who lives close to the scene said they heard over 50 gunshots. “I was in the house and heard gunshots. The gunshots were not the normal ones were the shots goes on after another. It was kind of non-stop shots, there were more than 50 if I’m to count,” she said.

Cops spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk said they have recorded the murder incident but no one has been arrested. He said the incident happened at 08:07 at the corners of Sheffield and Moonwood Drive.

“Police were called out to a shooting incident at above mentioned address where the found the body of a 20 year old male lying on the driver side with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The motive seems to be possible taxi related. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” said Van Wyk.
