Warrant Officer Lindela Mraqisa was one of the five people who were tragically killed in a shooting incident in NY5 Gugulethu on Saturday 30 September evening. According to police, Mraqisa was a close aide of Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale since 2019.
Mathale, has expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of his close protector. In response to the incident cops in Western Cape have mobilised resources to trace and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
According to police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut, five people were sitting in their cars when gunmen fired shots and killed them. The incident happened in NY5 around 11pm. Mathale voiced his concern about the number of police officers being killed both on and off duty. He called for a collective effort from society and the government to combat this growing problem. Mathale urged the police to ensure that those responsible for Mraqisa’s death are found and held accountable.
Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, and the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, will lead a delegation to the officers home on Monday 02 October 2023. Following this visit, they will proceed to visit the family of another off-duty police officer who was found killed in Mfuleni on Sunday morning. This incident is currently under investigation, and one suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is urging members of the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the individuals responsible for the tragic mass shooting.
