This is not the first time a child has fallen in a pit latrine at Eastern Cape schools. In 2018, Lumka Mketwa, a grade R learner from Luna primary school in Mbizana suffered the same fate. The incident also happened in March. After Lumka’s death, the government promised to eradicate pit latrines from schools but very little has been done.
Besides Eastern Cape, another boy Michael Komape also fell in a pit latrine at Mahlodumela primary school in 2014.
